Prayer 1 (oração1) - plaster sculpture (escultura de gesso)

In this piece the artist uses plaster to create a simple and harmonious sculpture which rises up to a great height, suggesting a prayer. The sculpture rests on a solid base of ançã stone, which represents the earthly anchor of the winged form rising up in prayer above it. This combination of different, contrasting forms creates tensions and unsuspected contradictions. Saliences and convexities which hold the gaze give rise to a wide variety of perspectives. Shadows and other effects of the light caused by the characteristics of the sculpture itself evoke the contradictions of the human condition. However, the stance of the main sculptural element dominates the whole, conferring on the entire sculpture an individual and unique mystical identity.

Nesta obra o autor utiliza gesso para esculpir uma forma simples e harmoniosa que se eleva numa ampla extensão que sugere uma prece. A escultura está assente sobre uma base firme de pedra de ançã, que representa a amarra terrena da forma alada que mais acima se eleva em oração. Esta combinação de diversas formas (saliências e concavidades), onde o olhar se detém, propiciam uma grande variedade de perspectivas. Sombras e efeitos de luz diversos, gerados pelas próprias características da peça escultórica, permitem sugerir as contradições da condição humana. No entanto, a atitude do elemento escultórico principal domina o conjunto e confere ao todo esculpido uma sugestiva identidade mística.

The sculpture rests on a solid base of rough cork oak, modelled by the whims of nature, which represents the earthly anchor of the winged form rising up in prayer above it. This combination of different, contrasting forms creates tensions and unsuspected contradictions. Saliences and convexities which hold the gaze give rise to a wide variety of perspectives. Shadows and other effects of the light caused by the characteristics of the sculpture itself evoke the contradictions of the human condition. However, the stance of the main sculptural element dominates the whole, conferring on the entire sculpture an individual and unique mystical identity.

A escultura está assente sobre uma base firme de sobro rude, trabalhada de forma caprichosa pela natureza, que representa a amarra terrena da forma alada que mais acima se eleva em oração. Esta combinação de diversas formas em confronto cria tensões e insuspeitas contradições. Saliências e convexidades, onde o olhar se detém, propiciam uma grande variedade de perspectivas. Sombras e efeitos de luz diversos, gerados pelas próprias características da peça escultórica, permitem sugerir as contradições da condição humana. No entanto, a atitude do elemento escultórico principal domina o conjunto e confere ao todo esculpido uma identidade mística muito própria e única.

 

amamede (António José Mamede de Albuquerque) was born in Cape Verde in 1943. Formerly of dual nationality, in 1974 he chose Portuguese nationality.

A teacher in higher education with a PhD in Medicine, he has been devoted to Painting since 1975.

His work was exhibited for the first time at the “Exposição Artistas de Coimbra” [Coimbra Artists Exhibition] organised in 1988 by the XI Congresso Nacional de Ortopedia [XI National Orthopedics Congress]. An associate of the Movimento Artístico de Coimbra [Coimbra Artistic Movement] from 1988, in 1994 he began collaborating in the teaching of Artistic Anatomy to students of ARCA-ETAC.

He was Associate Professor at the Coimbra University College of Arts, where he taught Theoretical Anatomy (1st and 2nd year of the various licentiate’s degrees) until 2008.

He is represented in a number of private collections, mainly belonging to collectors in the Portuguese and Brazilian university environment.
